WordPress vs Next.js: Which Should Your Business Website Use?

We work with both technologies and neither is the right answer for everyone. This guide explains, without jargon, the differences that actually matter for your business.

The short answer

If you need a simple website, want to edit lots of content yourself every week and have a tight budget, WordPress is a sensible choice. If you want maximum speed, security and design freedom, or your website has features built around your business, Next.js is usually the better bet in the medium term.

The rest of this article explains why.

What each one is

WordPress

WordPress is a content management system (CMS). It is installed on a server, you pick a theme and add features through plugins. It is the most widely used platform on the web and has a huge community, which means there is a plugin for almost everything.

Next.js

Next.js is a development framework based on React. It is not a "site builder": the website is coded to measure, page by page and component by component. Content can come from files, a database or a separate CMS, depending on the project.

Point-by-point comparison

Speed

A Next.js website can generate pages in advance and serve them almost instantly, with only the code each page needs. WordPress can be fast, but heavy themes and many plugins tend to pile up scripts and server requests that slow it down, especially on mobile.

Speed matters to Google (through Core Web Vitals) and even more to visitors: a slow website loses people before they see what you offer.

Security

Because WordPress is so popular, it is also a frequent target of automated attacks, usually through outdated plugins or themes. A well-maintained WordPress site can be secure, but it requires regular updates.

A Next.js website served as static pages has a much smaller attack surface: there is no public admin panel and no third-party plugins running on the server.

Maintenance

With WordPress, maintenance is ongoing: updating the core, theme and plugins, and checking that one update has not broken something else. With Next.js there are fewer moving parts, but every change to structure or features goes through a developer.

Editing content

Here WordPress has a clear advantage for anyone who wants full autonomy: the editor is familiar and anyone on the team can publish a new page. In a Next.js project, editing depends on how it was built: it can have a custom panel (as in the Climatiza+ project), an external CMS, or changes made by us.

Design

With WordPress, most websites start from a theme. It is quick to launch, but the result tends to look like many other sites, and deeply customising a theme is often more work than building from scratch. With Next.js, the design is custom, with no limits imposed by a theme.

SEO

Both allow good SEO. In WordPress it is usually done with plugins. In Next.js, titles, metadata, structured data and language versions are coded directly, with full control. Next.js's real SEO advantage comes mostly from speed.

Costs

A themed WordPress website may have a lower upfront cost. But you should also count hosting, premium theme and plugin licences and maintenance over the years. A Next.js website usually has a higher upfront cost, because it is custom-built, and often lower hosting and maintenance costs.

The right question is not "which is cheaper today" but "what will this website cost me over the next three years, and how many customers will it bring".

When we recommend WordPress

  • A simple company website on a small budget.
  • Your team publishes lots of new content every week and wants full autonomy.
  • A standard online store where WooCommerce covers every need (see our guide to online stores with MB Way).

When we recommend Next.js

  • Speed and first impressions are decisive for sales.
  • You want a unique design that does not look like another theme.
  • The website has custom features: client areas, catalogues, integrations, bookings.
  • Multilingual websites, like the ones we built for HM Pinturas and RKMotors.
  • You prefer less maintenance and fewer security worries.

Conclusion

There is no absolutely better technology, only the one that fits your business. Our process always starts with what the website has to achieve, and only then do we choose the tool. Learn more about how we work on our website development page.
